In this 1934-35 oil painting artist Stephens Berge captures a whimsical view of skaters headed down the hill from Elkridge to join others enjoying the frozen Patapsco River below. The Viaduct Hotel train station stands in its full glory across the bridge. The original oil painting is in the headquaters of the Elkridge Heritage Society. Stephens Berge (1908-1988) lived in Maryland and is known for rural landscapes. Born and raised near Clifton Park in Northeast Baltimore, Mr. Berge was the son of the acclaimed Baltimore sculptor Edward Berge, who was best known for his studies of children. He also was the grandson of a German gravestone carver who immigrated to Baltimore from Germany in 1872. His twin brother, Henery Berge, also was an artist.
